Penguins

There were a few penguin tours available on our trip, but decided on the Magdalena Island trip from Punta Arenas, Chile.   The bus that picks us up at the ship drives right onto the Ferry.. We had a guide that offered narration thoughout the trip on our bus, its about an hour and a half, free coffee is available.  If you wish to get up on the deck it is very very windy but a real thrill !  The ferry is equipped with restrooms as well.

Here is how Celebrity describes it :

Magdalena Island Natural Penguin Reserve

This tour introduces you to one of the most unspoiled fauna habitats to be found in South America. Located 25 miles north from Punta Arenas and 10 miles offshore, Magdalena Island is a natural reserve of Magellan Penguins, cormorants and other birds. Your tour begins with an approximate two hour ferry ride across the Strait of Magellan, sailing the same waters as Francis Drake, Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, Charles Darwin and other exploring seafarers. On arrival to Magdalena Island, you will observe one of the largest penguin colonies of Southern Chile. It has been estimated that nearly 70,000 Magellan Penguins may be found on the island. During your stop at the island, you will be able to observe these curious and entertaining birds. There will be time to walk up to the lighthouse for a panoramic view of the landscape before the return ferry ride to the cruise ship pier. A light box lunch is included.

There is approximately 30 minutes of walking over uneven terrain. Comfortable walking shoes and suitable clothing for cold wind and possible rain are recommended.

We had a wonderul day !  It wasn't really cold, but the wind was!   Good idea to dress in layers, have a coat that cuts the wind and I really was glad of long underwear, I was very comfortable and had a pleasant time.  There appears to be no way to do this particular excursion except through the ship, and it was one of the first to sell out so book early or online in advance.
